Sunday Contemplation: A note on platforms, process, and presumption of innocence
When charges are reported in a high-profile case, public reaction no longer unfolds slowly or privately. It forms in real time, in comment threads, and along platform lines. The contrast between Reddit and Facebook discussion following recent reporting involving Ellie Wilson offers a clear example of how differently judgement now takes shape.
The Reddit Response
Discussion is fragmented and often uneasy. Many return to legal first principles:
- Presumption of innocence is repeatedly invoked.
- Criticism is directed at narrative certainty rather than individuals.
- Uncertainty is tolerated as part of due process.

Threads consolidate quickly around a dominant story. Speculation becomes certainty:

This divergence is not about intelligence or compassion. It reflects how platforms reward behaviour. Spaces that privilege argument and challenge tolerate uncertainty. Spaces that privilege affirmation and emotional alignment tend to punish it. In such environments, restraint feels cold, and waiting for evidence feels like disloyalty. Process loses status. Narrative takes its place.
The Selective Lens
Many who defend the accused go further than expressing support. They publicly assert who they believe the complainant to be, naming or implying an individual despite no official confirmation. That asymmetry matters.

Justice systems can survive anger. They can survive disagreement. What they cannot survive is a culture where certainty excuses recklessness, and narrative allegiance overrides responsibility.
